Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences Achieves Distinction in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2024

Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences is pleased to announce its significant accomplishments in the recent Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects evaluation for the year 2024. The university has achieved notable recognition in the fields of “clinical medicine and public health”, as well as in “research impact and international collaboration” indicators. This year, only nine universities affiliated to the Ministry of Health and Medical Education in Iran met the criteria to qualify for the Shanghai rankings.

In “research impact” indicator, Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences distinguished itself by ranking among the top medical universities in the country, alongside Babol, Mazandaran, and Guilan Universities of Medical Sciences. Furthermore, the university secured the second position nationally in terms of “international cooperation”, following Tabriz University of Medical Sciences.

In the field of “clinical medicine”, Kermanshah University attained third place nationally and ranked within the top 401 to 500 universities globally, following the Tehran and Iran Universities of Medical Sciences. Additionally, the university demonstrated considerable progress in “public health”, achieving fourth place nationally and also falling within the same global range (401-500). The top three positions in public health were held by Tehran, Kerman, and Shahid Beheshti Universities of Medical Sciences.

Dr. Yadollah Bahrami, Director of Medical Information and Scientific Resources at the university, extended his congratulations to the academic community for this noteworthy achievement. He provided insight into the evaluation criteria employed in the Shanghai Ranking, stating, “The Shanghai Ranking, formally known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), is recognized internationally as one of the most prestigious university ranking systems. Published by Shanghai Jiaotong University in China, it serves as a reliable reference for evaluating the quality of universities due to its rigorous and transparent criteria.”

Dr. Bahrami elaborated, “The Shanghai ranking is founded upon four primary criteria: the quality of education, the quality of faculty members, research output, and per capita performance. These are assessed using six specific indicators: the number of faculty members and graduates who have received the Nobel Prize and Fields Medal, the number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in *Science* and *Nature* journals, the number of articles indexed in the Advanced Indexes of Sciences and Social Sciences, and the overall scientific performance of each university. He noted that Kermanshah University did not receive rankings in the fields of nursing, pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, or dentistry and oral sciences, and expressed optimism that appropriate initiatives and policies from relevant authorities will contribute to improvements in these areas.”

Dr. Bahrami emphasized, “This valuable achievement reflects the diligent efforts of the university’s faculty members, students, and staff in enhancing the quality of education, research, and medical services. Attaining such a rank, in close competition with esteemed global institutions, underscores Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences’ respected status within the international academic community and its commitment to advancing contemporary science and knowledge. Building on this success, the university is dedicated to becoming a leading research and education hub in the health sector nationally and aims to achieve an even higher standing in global rankings.”
